Original Oil Painting “I Shall Give Thee Plenty”
Hello Everyone,
Here we are at the close of another weekend. It seems, the older I get, the quicker the weekend goes by. Oh well, it was a fun weekend and my wife and I were able to accomplish a lot.
Now, on to the painting. I love the colors in this painting. It was completed on a stretched linen support, which I do like but not as much as hard board. The linen does, however, keep the colors on the surface like hard wood does and everything just looks better.
If you hadn’t noticed, I love putting deep rich colors into my paintings as well as some sort of water element. This painting is no different. I do not use a lot of tube colors, so these are from doing a lot of mixing which does unify the painting.
Another characteristic beginning to emerge in my work is the use of thicker color. In some places, seems like more and more lately, I apply the paint much thicker than in other areas. This accomplishes a few things. First off, the colors are more vibrant due to the thickness of the paint. Another advantage is, when used for highlights, it gives that particular element a certain amount of “POP” and lastly, I do believe that was how oil paint was meant to be used. Many masters used very thick amounts of oil paint with deliberate and precise brush stroke to create the works the world looks at in awe.
Here is the problem. An artist needs to be very confident in what they are doing to utilize thicker paint. For some reason, we think that thinner applications of paint will somehow eliminate any possible mistakes and therefore, make all of our woks a masterpiece, and so on. I know it took me awhile before I was comfortable enough within my own technique before I began to place thicker paint in small, obscure areas to try it out. The more comfortable I became, the more I used it. Now, I look for areas to go thicker and there really is no second guessing.
I hope everyone is doing well.
Have A Blessed Day My Friends
