Add A Little Texture

original landscape oil painting

Hello Everyone;

I hope your week is going well. Mine has been pretty good. My wife and I have both been pretty busy at our jobs, so, it is a nice change to be able to relax and create a blog post for my site.

This painting is an 11” X 14” Original oil painting I completed maybe a year ago. As you can tell from my web site, I love fresh water and waterfalls in particular. In my head, the composition worked well, but when I was painting the final details, mainly the wild flowers, it just fell apart. I loved the way the composition came together, but the wild flowers some how did not fit.

I did what I normally do when I come to an impasse in my work and sit behind my desk and look at the painting. I take a drink of whatever beverage I have at that time and I try and look at my painting as if I had never seen it before. The chair I sit in is approximately ten feet from my easel, so the perspective works well.

It only took a few moments to realize the texture of the wild flowers was off, not the flowers themselves. You see, most of this composition was painted in a relatively rough manner which provided the texture you see in it. When I painted the flowers, I was using delicate strokes and that just did not work at all.

I finished my drink, turned my Jimmy Buffett cd a bit louder and grabbed my pallet knife. I went to my pallet, loaded my knife and began laying in heavy textured flowers. Not only was that paint application a lot of fun to execute, but as you can see, it turned out perfectly. The flowers now fir the rest of the composition.

I love the way things work out.

Have A Blessed Day Ny Friends
